Monarch populations are declining due to the loss of milkweed habitats. Milkweed is the ONE plant that Monarch Butterflies lay their eggs on and Monarch larvae will feed on. Milkweed species native to Kansas include Butterfly, Common, Smooth, Swamp, Whorled, Green, Narrow Leaved, Purple and Antelope Horn. Growing several species of milkweed is beneficial because the monarchs seem to be attracted to different species throughout the season. Different species bloom at different times, which will attract the largest variety of butterflies. The larvae use the leaves of the plant for food, while the adults use the flowers for nectar. To maintain the magnificent monarch migration, planting milkweeds needs to become a priority.
